A visit to Ronda, Malaga and Nerja, Spain

Article by Warren Ward

Malaga

Malaga is the capital city of the Costa del Sol, it is also one of the provinces of Andalusia, a port city and also the location for the international airport which is the largest airport in Spain.

The population of Malaga and the surrounding area is estimated at over 1,000,000 and this number swells in the summer with the influx of visitors. Malaga is surrounded by mountains and there are two rivers, the Guadalhorce and the Guadalmedina which flow past the city into the Mediterranean.

Malaga has a wealth of history going back over 3,000 years. It was founded by the Phoenicians and named ‘Malaka’, meaning salt, probably because of the fish which was salted by the harbour. In the 8th century it was inhabited by the Moors and became an important trading city. In more recent times, tourism has naturally boosted the economy.

Malaga is a very popular tourist destination, made more so in recent years, because of the number of cheap charter flights which now operate in and out of the international airport. But it is also from here that people can reach a large part of Andalucia and may choose to stay in the famous ‘white villages’ or the historic cities of Sevilla or Granada.

There is plenty to do and see in Malaga – the Arabic Fortress, the Gibralfaro Castle from where there is a beautiful view over the city, the harbour which is one of the most important in Spain and various museums, cathedrals and churches as well as, of course, the bullring and it can also be known as the birthplace of the actor, Antonio Banderas!

Nerja

Nerja is found at the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol, approximately 50 km from Malaga, 1 hour and 15 minutes from Granada and the infamous Alhambra Palace and from there just another half an hour to reach the skiing regions of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Nerja is steeped in history and is well known for the primitive paintings in the Nerja Caves, which were discovered in the late 1950′s and which have now become one of the most visited tourist attractions in Spain. The caves are also home to the world’s longest stalactite. Nerja is also famous for the Balcon de Europa, ‘the balcony of Europe’. A wonderful promenade which sits between two small coves on the edge of a towering cliff which was once the sight of a great Moorish castle. It offers magnificent views across the Mediterranean as well as numerous bars and cafes where one can sit sipping refreshments while enjoying the scenic surroundings.

Nerja has some lovely beaches which are mostly rocky coves with sharp sand and there are some good restaurants along the beaches which specialise in local fish dishes. The old town of Nerja has small, narrow streets which are busy in the summer and the weekly market is held on a Tuesday.

Nerja is also becoming a popular destination for walkers exploring the mountainous areas of the Sierra Almijar and the Sierra Tejeda.

Nerja has a wide range of good hotels as well as many private apartments and villas to choose from where you can enjoy your holiday and the surrounding area.

Ronda

Ronda is one of the most beautiful historic towns in Andalucia and is part of the province of Malaga. Ronda can be found approximately 50 kilometres from the coastal town of San Pedro de Alcantara along a very winding road through the mountains, the Serrania de Ronda and it is 113km from Malaga. Ronda has a population of approximately 35,000 people and it is 739m above sea level. The average year round temperature is 15C and has around 2700 hours of sunshine per year.

There is lots to do and see in Ronda. It is famous for having the oldest bullring in Spain and together with the New Bridge, the Puente Nuevo, these are two of the symbols of Ronda. The New Bridge is, in fact, over 200 years old and took more than 40 year to complete. The masonry stones were brought up from the depths of the Tajo gorge. The Bullring, The Plaza de Toros, is recognized as one of the oldest in Spain and one of the most monumental in design. It took 6 years to build and opened in 1785. The City Museum and the Bullfighting Museum are also very popular sights to visit. The Sierra de las Nieves natural park is within the province and has the most important forest of Spanish firs.

The fair and festival of Pedro Romero is usally held at the beginning of September and is a good time of year for tourists to visit.

Ronda is a wonderful place to visit, but an even better place to stay. There are many lovely villas, apartments or townhouses available to rent or maybe choose to stay in one of the picturesque surrounding villages such as Montejaque or Gaucin.

Nerja is quite a pretty place to stay, there are lots of bars and clubs (not that you are old enough for them). a visit to the caves are a must. a short bus ride away is the water park at torre del mar. Nerja is a very english speaking place, so no need for spanish there. At nerja there is a land train or horse drawn carts so you can see around the town, the sea is really clear and the beaches are good, there are also internet cafes so you can keep up to date online, at night on the balcon de europa they have street artists, varying from people painting your picture , live statues, pan pipe players to magicians, it is one of the best places to go on holiday on the costa del sol, have fun

Question by SusieQ: any info on Nerja, Spain?
I asked for details a month ago and had some very useful answers however, I was wondering if the truckers strike was having any impact on supermarket shelves over there. Also I had replies from 2 people who I would like to ask questions to but they don’t allow e-mail. Any ideas?

As for contacting the 2 people who don’t allow emails other than doing what you’ve already done with asking this question the only other thing I can suggest is – if they have a 360 page contact them thru that medium.

Question by David F: Suggestions welcome ref. top Spanish holiday spot for family with young kids, flying via Malaga, e.g. Nerja?
Hi, we are looking for a high quality villa holiday (or accomodation with 3 bedrooms) in easy distance by car from Malaga airport. Must have clean, safe beach for children and good selection of restaurants but not too touristy. Haven’t been to area before so looking for advise of possible locations – going end of October.

Hello,

I would definitely recommend Nerja. It has everything you ask for. I would particularly recommend the Torrecilla beach area as it is very close to Nerja centre. There are also many pretty typical “white villages” to visit inland. Most estate agents in Nerja deal with property rentals – do an internet search and you can view properties online. Good Luck. Nerja is a Perfect Destination

Nerja is located along the western side of Costa Sol and is the perfect destination for any visitor. It has a wonderful warm temperature all year around. You can also enjoy the beautiful landscapes such as the stunning mountains along with its cliffs and gold sand beaches. It is also known for its innovative architecture that you will probably see when you go to the historic quarter. Its delicious local cuisine is also a must try and don’t forget to visit all the different festivals as well too.

The most vital beach to visit is the Burriana beach which is an extension of sand for over 700 meters and has a cliff you can climb where you can see all of Nerja from above there. The beach is also highly equipped with different services such as showers, a playground for kids, restaurants and even a clinic. Other popular beaches are Torrecilla and Calahonda, which are located under Balcon Europa.

There you will also find everything you need, from different summer houses to rent, different hostels and hotels, restaurants and bars, along with various shops. Emerging from the cliffs are the quiet beautiful coves of Caleta, Barranco, Calas, and Maro. On all of them, as well as being able to enjoy a refreshing dip, you will be able to do all sorts of water sports, whether its sailing or diving.

Perhaps one of the most important landmarks would have to be the Nerja cave which was discovered around 1969 and has been a popular tourist destination ever since. What makes it special is that it has over three kilometers of galleries underground. It is always open to the tourists and has been declared an artistic monument.  In the Nerja cave, you can also witness the geological developments that have been taking place during the centuries.

Another landmark is the Cathedral where you will be stunned from all the large halls, highly decorated ceilings, and the vaults inside. The most important festival that takes place is Nerja is Hall of Waterfall. It has been named this by the locals in order to represent the different figures of music and dance who have been performing here for decades. One thing worth noting is that Nerja cave is also an interest for archaeology.  This is due to it being the house of rare Paleolithic paintings. Throughout the previous years, other paintings representing the Neolithic period have been discovered.

Costa del Sol Holidays for Plenty to See in Nerja

For your Nerja is a resort located in the province of Malaga on the Costa del Sol. It is a beautiful town that is facing a spectacular mountain range. This city was once a fishing village but was redesigned to take advantage of tourists visiting this part of Spain.

Nerja is home to several beaches but they are not the typical yellow sandy beaches that you expect to see in Spain: they tend to have a mixture of pebbles and sand. But if you want to go to a beach in Nerja try Playazo beach, the longest beach in the city and ideal for sunbathing or a pleasant walk. Another popular beach is Burriana beach that has white sand and clean water with incredible mountains visible in the background. Make sure you arrive early as it gets busy during the daytime.

There are many things to see while wandering around the Nerja area. If you go down to Burriana beach you can find the “Balcon de Europa”, a promenade that offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. Below the promenade is a large restaurant overlooking the sea in the distance and set against the backdrop of the mountains. This is one of the most famous sites around Nerja.

Another interesting sight in this resort is the Church of El Salvador, which was built in 1600. You can clearly see the influence of Baroque and Moorish architecture there. The most famous attraction is probably of Nerja caves which are not too far from the centre of the city. The caves are more than 5 million years old and have several large chambers which house many stalactites and stalagmites. You can also see some prehistoric wall paintings that are over 20,000 years old. You want to make sure you take your camera with you so you can record this once in a lifetime experience. One cave has been transformed into a concert hall; if you are visiting in July you can enjoy flamenco music festival being held here while on your . As you can see, there are a lot of things in Nerja so maybe you should make a visit.
